There are numerous criminal offences arising from the possession or trafficking in drugs and controlled substances.

The charges can range from the least serious drug charges of simple possession of a drug or controlled substance through to trafficking and possession for the purpose of trafficking in a particular drug.

The seriousness of the offence may be determined by the quantity of the prohibited substance as well as the type of drug; with possession of marijuana, for example, being viewed less seriously by the courts than drugs such as cocaine and heroin.
